 FAUX FINISHES

Ten years ago the term “faux painting” (faux means “fake” in French) was reserved for anything that mimicked a natural element, such as marble or wood grain. Now, with the popularity of all types of decorative paint finishes, decorative painters have adopted the word faux as an umbrella term for glazing, marbling, subtractive sponging, color wash, combing, rag rolling, and actual faux finishes.
Some clients imagine an intimate, old-world atmosphere and others prefer contemporary elegance. During our consultation on faux painting, we consider not only the physical elements, such as lighting, flooring and scale, but the homeowners’ vision as well, which is why our work is thoughtfully customized in order to compliment, or transform, the environment. All of our faux finishes consist of 2 to 3 layers applied in various ways so as to achieve subtly differing textures, with each one lending a different “feel.” The consultation, an on-location sample, custom mixing of colors, and sheen choices assure our client of the perfect faux painting, adding depth and warmth to the space.
Our hand rendered faux finishes and murals are exciting attractions for a worldly public, distinguishing business establishments from their competition. Knowing our clients' needs and providing them with fast, efficient service and flexible solutions (whether during construction or while open to the public) are important elements of our success.
We take pride in our ability to produce unequaled results with time limitations and in challenging work conditions. An industry leader in developing systems for using all water-base decorative painting techniques, Artesanos Design Group is at the forefront of faux finishing.
All painting techniques should enhance and balance a room making it warm and inviting using professional color consulting and design. Professional Faux Painting, Color Consulting, & Interior Design
Faux painting originally referred to painting surfaces, including walls, furniture, floors, countertops and trim, to look like something else. Plaster columns were often painted to look like marble, new furniture was "antiqued," "distressed" or "crackled" to look old, a wood grain was painted on new trim and molding to match existing doors.

Although many illusions can be achieved with faux finishing techniques on flat surfaces, textured products can create three dimensional effects. Textured paints containing solid materials like silica can make walls look like suede. Products applied in layers to walls, fireplaces, ceilings and furniture can look and feel like real stone, crumbling masonry, peeling paint, fossils embedded in walls, etc.

New synthetic products developed to imitate old-fashioned colored or white plasters can be applied smooth or hand-troweled into different patterns and styles. Frescos can be created by applying art to canvas or directly on a wall, then layering with plaster. Some products and techniques can even be used outdoors.
